Running Down a Dream…
The photo up above was taken at about 1:00 pm at the Eppley Rec Center overlooking what once was LaPlata Beach. For those of you who were familiar with North Gym — this is a large rec center right next door. North Gym is now the home of the School of Public Health. And I think also Health and Human Performance, which will soon be moved to the new expansion of Cole Field House. Everybody got that straight??
It’s Tuesday — so that means an incredibly long day with its series of ups and downs. I left the house around 6:40 and drove through the rain to campus with plenty of time for my 8:00 PSYC lecture. I really like this class and the way our professor encourages discussions and demonstrations. Today we talked about reliability and validity. And favorite ice cream flavors as an indicator for personality.
9:30 was our biology lecture. More about the parts of the cell and their functions. (Yes, the mitochondria remains the powerhouse of the cell.) He then proceeded to head to YouTube yo show us a neat computer generated video portraying animation of cell processes to some spacey music. Which began. And then {record scratch} turned into Gangnam Style. Not sure if he planned this or not, but either way he sort of… danced to it. It was an awkward moment.
11:00 came around and I went to my PSYC TA’s office hours to discuss my upcoming paper. She wasn’t there so I waited. For twenty minutes. Until I re-read her introductory slides and found that the office hours were NOT from 11-12, but rather 1-2. Oops. But I had the opportunity to talk with a visiting professor from Bucknell who is studying characteristics of music which are similar to those of language.
Did some work in Hornbake. Then I went back to my car, traded my backpack for my gym bag, and went to Eppley to work out. WOW. Big place. Did the elliptical and treadmill for a while. Was surprised by the numbers of students there in the middle of the day.
Showered. On campus. So that was cool.
I found the microwave ovens at the student union building. Had an edamame power bowl. Did work. Went to my creating campaigns class — where we all got to introduce ourselves with specifics on our identity which made us different. For me — a whole lot of it is being a 47 year-old undergrad student. We reviewed our Myers-Briggs scores (I’m still an ENFP!).
Did an early dinner with Olive. She’s an amazing woman who taught me an introductory class in Fall of 1990, and we’ve remained close ever since. Was wonderful to see her after all these years, and I look forward to more time with her.
At 6:00 — my Bio lab. Microscopy. I’m not great with the microscope. Hard to get things focused well. Our group (three freshmen and myself) were the last to finish at 8:40. The end of a very long day.
I’m still on top of most things. But my lab sections are a bit more than I thought they’d be. Hopefully I can get more of a hang of it.
Next stop — Thursday. Two lectures and that’s it. Until then …
